The US drilling rig count added 1 rig to 1,768 rotary rigs working during the week ended Sept. 13, Baker Hughes Inc. reported.
Land-based drilling and offshore drilling were unchanged from last week at 1,682 and 65 rigs working, respectively. There were 63 rigs drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, 1 more than last week. Rigs drilling in inland waters increased by 1 unit to 21.
Rigs drilling for oil were down 4 units to 1,361 while gas-targeting rigs were up 7 units to 401. Six rigs were considered unclassified, 2 fewer than a week ago.
Horizontal drilling rigs improved by 1 unit to 1,076 and directional drilling rigs declined by 2 units to 248.
Canada lost 9 rigs drilling for oil from a week ago to reach 238 units. Rigs targeting gas in Canada remained at 142, unchanged from a week ago. Canada’s total rig count was 380, down 9 from last week. Canada currently has 26 more total rigs than the comparable week a year ago.
Major states, basins
The largest increase seen by any of the major oil and gas producing states was in Texas, where 12 more units emerged from a week ago to give the state 850 total. Pennsylvania added 3 units to 54. Louisiana gained 2 units to 113. Wyoming and California each added 1 unit to respective totals of 50 and 36. North Dakota at 168, West Virginia at 36, Ohio at 34, Utah at 30, Kansas at 27, and Arkansas at 13 were each unchanged. Colorado lost 1 unit to 67. Alaska dropped 2 units to 12. New Mexico decreased by 4 units to 70. Oklahoma’s 6-unit decline brought that state’s total to 164.
Noteworthy changes this week in major US basins included a 4-rig gain in the Permian to 460. The Eagle Ford and Marcellus were each up 3 units to 234 and 89, respectively. The Haynesville was down 4 units to 39 rigs working.
