Crude oil has been removed from a barge that was under tow when it collided Mar. 12 with a liquefied petroleum gas pipeline near Bayou Perot 30 miles south of New Orleans, the US Coast Guard said.
Flaring operations continued Mar. 15 to remove residual LPG in the pipeline. Chevron Corp. owns the pipeline, which has been shut in. The pipeline connects a Venice, La., gas plant to a pump station in Paradis, La. (OGJ Online, Mar. 14, 2013).
The Shannon E. Settoon barge was removed from the scene and 2,200 bbl of crude oil was offloaded onto another barge. The Shannon E. Settoon is owned by owned by Settoon Towing of Pierre Part, La.
“At no time was any pollution observed coming from the barge,” USCG said.
Responders have deployed 11,100 ft of boom around the tank barge to contain any possible pollution risks. USCG maintains flight restrictions around the barge and continues investigating cause of the incident.
