Alberta regulators have begun reviewing applications filed last year by Value Creation Inc. (VCI), Calgary, for an in situ oil sands project 10 km northeast of Fort McMurray.

The project, called Advanced Tristar, would use steam-assisted gravity drainage to develop bitumen reserves in three phases, the first with production capacity of 15,000 b/d and the others with 30,000 b/d each.

The full development would involve drilling of about 256 well pairs from 40 pads over the project’s projected 25-year life.

VCI proposes to use proprietary processing and upgrading technology that, after processing and the addition of diluent, would yield 79,688 b/d of oil containing almost no asphaltenes after full development.

Alberta’s Energy Resources Conservation Board, Environment and Sustainable Resource Development, and other departments are reviewing the applications and environmental impact assessment.
