The US Coast Guard has yet to determine how much crude oil was spilled into the lower Mississippi River in Vicksburg, Miss., when two tank barges hit a railroad bridge on Jan. 27, USCG said.
The tank barges, both loaded with crude, were being towed by the tug Nature's Way Endeavor, which is owned by Nature’s Way Marine LLC. Both barges were damaged, and one released oil into the river, USCG said.
The leaking tank contained 80,000 gal of light crude. USCG closed a section of the river to all traffic.
No injuries were reported. USCG is investigating cause of the incident.
