Lundin Petroleum AB said its Norwegian unit has spudded the 16/2-16 appraisal well on the northeast flank of the Johan Sverdrup discovery on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, where the well is expected to encounter a limited oil column.
Lundin Norway AS is drilling 16/2-16 in PL501 to establish the depth, quality, and thickness of the Jurassic reservoir sequences 3 km from the recent 16/2-13A well and 16/2-10 well in PL265.
Those wells found excellent reservoir and deeper oil water contacts than seen elsewhere in the Sverdrup discovery, and 16/2-16 will probe reservoir quality and the oil-water contact between them. It will provide valuable information on depth conversion at this location and a better understanding of aquifer support, Lundin said.
The Transocean Winner semisubmersible is to drill 16/2-16 to 2,250 m below mean sea level in about 50 days.
Lundin Petroleum is operator of PL501 with 40% interest. Statoil Petroleum AS has 40% and Maersk Oil Norway 20%.
