The US rig count gained 6 units during the week ending July 6. Baker Hughes Inc. reported the US total at 1,965 rigs for the week, compared with 1,887 during the same week last year.

The US rig count gained 6 units during the week ending July 6. Baker Hughes Inc. reported the US total at 1,965 rigs for the week, compared with 1,887 during the same week last year. Of the recent week’s total, oil rigs were down 2 units from the previous week at 1,419. Gas rigs, meanwhile, were up 8 to 542. Four active rotaries were unclassified.

Baker Hughes reported rigs on directional holes at 242, up 7 units from the previous week and 2 fewer than the same week of 2011.

The number of rigs drilling horizontally increased by 3 during the week to 1,174, compared with 1,073 in the comparable week a year ago.

Among the major drilling states with increases this week were North Dakota, up 4 rigs to 196; Pennsylvania, up 3 rigs to 78; and Oklahoma, Colorado, and West Virginia, down 1 rig each to respective counts of 201, 69, and 27. Three states were unchanged from a week ago: Louisiana, 120; California, 55; and Wyoming, 42. Four states—New Mexico, 84; Ohio, 18; Arkansas, 17; and Alaska, 7—lost 1 rig each compared with a week ago. Texas, at 927, was down 2 rigs.

Canada’s rig count was 264, including 212 rigs drilling for oil and 52 drilling for gas. The total was up 3 units from the previous week and down 67 units from the same week of 2011.
