US weekly drilling rig count drops by a dozen units

The US rig count declined a dozen units during the week ending July 13. The US total reached 1,953 for the week, Baker Hughes Inc. reported, compared with 1,905 during the same week last year.

The US rig count declined a dozen units during the week ending July 13. The US total reached 1,953 for the week, Baker Hughes Inc. reported, compared with 1,905 during the same week last year. Of the recent week’s total, oil rigs were up 8 units from the previous week at 1,427. Gas rigs, meanwhile, were down 20 to 522. Four active rotaries were unclassified.

Rigs on directional holes were reported at 232, down 10 units from a week ago and 21 fewer than the same week last year.

The number of rigs drilling horizontally decreased by 8 units during the week to 1,166, compared with 1,086 in the comparable week a year ago.

Among the major drilling states with decreases this week were Texas, down 17 rigs to 910; Louisiana, down 5 to 115; Colorado, down 3 to 66; and California and Alaska, down 1 rig each to respective counts of 54 and 6. Three states were unchanged from a week ago: Pennsylvania, 78; West Virginia, 27; and Arkansas, 17. Oklahoma, at 202, and Ohio, at 19, were both up 1 rig from a week ago. Up 3 rigs each were North Dakota, 199, and Wyoming, 45. New Mexico, up 7, reached 91 units.

Canada’s rig count was 296, including 226 rigs drilling for oil and 70 drilling for gas. The total was up 32 units from the previous week and down 98 units from last year’s comparable week.
