The US rig count declined by 11 units during the week ending July 27. The total number of rotary rigs in the US reached 1,924 this week, Baker Hughes Inc. reported. This compares with 1,908 during the comparable week last year.
Land drilling operations again bore the brunt of this loss, reaching 1,855, down 11 units from a week ago. There were 18 rigs drilling in inland waters, unchanged from last week.
Of the total, 51 rigs were drilling offshore, also unchanged from a week ago. Of these rigs, 48 were drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.
Of the recent week’s total, oil rigs were up by 2 units from the previous week at 1,416. Gas rigs, meanwhile, retreated 13 units to 505. Three active rotaries were unclassified, unchanged from a week ago.
Rigs drilling directionally were reported at 240, up 10 units from a week ago and 6 fewer than the same week last year. The number of rigs drilling horizontally decreased by 13 units to 1,151 compared with 1,080 in the comparable week a year ago.
Among the major drilling states with decreases this week were Oklahoma, down 9 rigs to 193; North Dakota, down 5 to 193; New Mexico, down 3 to 83; and Alaska, down 1 unit to 4. Five states were unchanged from a week ago: Pennsylvania, 78; Colorado, 65; West Virginia, 24; Ohio, 18; and Arkansas, 17. Louisiana, at 119, was up 1 rig from a week ago. Up 2 rigs, California reached 56 units. Texas and Wyoming, meanwhile, gained 4 rigs each to reach respective counts of 904 and 51.
Canada’s rig count was 338, including 247 rigs drilling for oil and 91 drilling for gas. The total was up 10 units from the previous week and down 57 units from last year’s comparable week.
