Aurelian Oil & Gas PLC has cased and will test its first exploratory well in the Zechstein reef oil play in Poland’s Central Lowlands.

The Sosna-1 well on the Torzym concession went to a total depth of 2,455 m measured depth after coring reservoir section. The well encountered the target Permian Zechstein Main dolomite reservoir at 2,337.8 m MD, 2.2 m shallow to prognosis. Aurelian recovered 46 m of core with good oil shows in the reservoir.

With bring in the wellbore, the well did not flow to surface when perforated, but reservoir pressure may be lower than that exerted by the brine column, Aurelian noted. The company will consider further testing options, including mobilizing coiled tubing for nitrogen unloading.

Meanwhile, first results from the Cybinka-Torzym surface geochem survey conducted by W.L. Gore & Associates confirmed an active petroleum system extending around the Sosna-1 area.
