The US rig count slipped by 7 during the week ending June 29. Baker Hughes Inc. reported the US total at 1,959 rigs for the week, compared with 1,886 during the same week last year. Of the recent week’s total, oil rigs were unchanged from the previous week at 1,421 and gas rigs, down 7 at 534. Four active rotaries were unclassified.
Baker Hughes reported rigs on directional holes at 235, up 2 units from the previous week and 8 fewer than the same week of 2011.
The number of rigs drilling horizontally increased by 3 during the week to 1,165, compared with 1,081 in the comparable week a year ago.
Rigs drilling vertically totaled 553, down 15 from the previous week and down 17 from the same week of 2011.
Major drilling states with decreases during the week were Texas, down 9 rigs to 929; California, down 8 rigs to 192; Pennsylvania, down 5 rigs to 75; Ohio, down 2 rigs to 19, and California, down 1 rig to 55. Four states were unchanged from a week ago: Louisiana, 120; New Mexico, 85; West Virginia, 26; and Arkansas, 18. States with weekly increases were Wyoming and Alaska, up 1 rig each to 42 and 8, respectively; Colorado, up 2 rigs to 68; and Oklahoma, up 10 rigs to 200.
Canada’s rig count was 261, including 214 rigs drilling for oil and 47 for gas. The total was up 23 units from the previous week and up 21 units from the same week of 2011.
