ATP Oil & Gas Corp., Houston, said its ATP East Med BV subsidiary has spudded the Shimshon deepwater exploratory well on the Shimshon license in the Mediterranean offshore Israel.

The well is projected to 14,764 ft in 3,622 ft of water on a gas prospect south of the Leviathan and Tamar gas discoveries. ATP is operator with 40% working interest.

ATP noted that Isramco Negev, its partner in Shimshon, has reported that independent reservoir engineers calculated the well’s probability of success at 20% based on a geological and geophysical evaluation. The consulting engineers estimated potential gross recoverable volumes at a high of 3.4 tcf, a low of 1.5 tcf, and a best estimate of 2.3 tcf.

ATP plans to set several casing strings until the well has penetrated the salt layer and will run a full set of electric logs at total depth to assist in evaluating target reservoirs.
