Heritage Oil PLC has spudded the first well on the 130 sq km undrilled Miran East structure and provided an update on the Miran West-3 well in the Kurdistan region of Iraq.

The Miran East-1 exploratory well is to go to 4,000 m to test Cretaceous and Jurassic reservoirs. It is expected to take 7 months to drill and test.

Meanwhile, the Miran West-3 deviated well is at 2,910 m, and wireline logs confirm the Lower Cretaceous reservoir to be gas-bearing. Drilling is to continue to Jurassic targets below 3,000 m.

No measurable hydrocarbons surfaced on test, indicating the lack of extensive fracture network in Lower Cretaceous at this location. Detailed work is being undertaken on the recently processed 3D seismic and offset well data to establish the areas of effective reservoir for this formation.

The Heritage Energy Middle East subsidiary is operator with 75% interest in the 1,015 sq km Miran Block. Genel Energy PLC has 25%. The interests are subject to back-in rights.
