BG Group and Ophir Energy PLC have declared a fourth gas discovery offshore Tanzania for a total mean gross recoverable resource of nearly 7 tcf of gas in the four wells.

Preliminary evaluation of results from the fourth discovery well, Jodari-1 on Block 1 off southern Tanzania, indicates a gross recoverable resource of 2.5 to 4.4 tcf of gas, BG Group said.

Jodari-1 is in 1,150 m of water 39 km off the coast. It is part of the current three-to-four well exploration program that also includes shooting 2,500 sq km of 3D seismic on Block 1.

The next target for drilling is Mzia-1 on Block 1, about 23 km north of Jodari-1. The previous discoveries are Chaza-1 on Block 1 and Chewa-1 and Pweza-1 on Block 4 (OGJ Online, Feb. 27, 2012).

BG Group is operator with 60% interest, and Ophir Energy has 40%.
