Eni SPA boosted its estimate of the potential of its Mamba South-1 discovery off Mozambique by 50% to 7.5 tcf of gas in place after deepening it through a separate pool with 90 m of gross pay.

Eni SPA boosted its estimate of the potential of its Mamba South-1 discovery off Mozambique by 50% to 7.5 tcf of gas in place after deepening it through a separate pool with 90 m of gross pay.

Eni said it considers “that this discovery can lead to a potential of up to 22.5 tcf of gas in place in the Mamba South area.”

The deeper part of the well in Offshore Area 4 off northern Mozambique encountered clean sands of Eocene age, the company said. Eni will further deepen Mamba South-1 to 5,000 m and then move the rig 22 km north to drill Mamba North-1, the second commitment well.

Eni previously said the well penetrated 212 m of continuous gas pay in high-quality Oligocene sands (OGJ Online, Oct. 20, 2011).

Eni said, “It is expected that the unprecedented potential of Tertiary play existing in Area 4 will be further defined in the forthcoming appraisal campaign.” The company is taking early steps toward local and international gas marketing.

Eni is the operator of Offshore Area 4 with a 70% participating interest. Galp Energia of Portugal, Korea Gas Corp., and Mozambique’s state ENH each has 10% interest, and ENH is carried through the exploration phase.
