Beach Energy Ltd., Adelaide, and Cooper Energy, Perth, have discovered oil with their Elliston-1 wildcat drilled on permit PEL 92 in South Australia’s Eromanga basin.

The well, the first in a nine-well program earmarked for the permit, encountered 3 m of net oil pay within the Jurassic-age Namur sandstone. Initial estimates suggest the reservoir holds 100,000 bbl of oil.

The Namur is high-quality and has potential to deliver high flow rates.

Elliston-1 will be tied back to nearby infrastructure within a few months. The well is about 25 km south of the venture’s recent oil discovery, Rincon-1, on the same permit.

Operator Beach holds 75%, while Cooper holds the remainder.
