MELBOURNE, Dec. 3 -- Santos Ltd. has given the thumbs up with a final investment decision approving the development of the Wortel natural gas project off Madura Island in the Sampang production-sharing contract in east Javanese waters, Indonesia.

Wortel is part of Santos’ East Java near-field development strategy and will add to the company’s existing production in the region from Maleo and Oyong fields (OGJ Online, Sept. 25, 2007).

Wortel is 7 km west of Oyong oil and gas field and will be developed as a tie-back to Oyong.

The scope of development includes two gas wells, a minimum facility wellhead platform, and a 10-km subsea gas pipeline to the existing Oyong facilities.

Wortel gas will then flow through the existing 60-km pipeline to the onshore gas processing plant at Grati and onward sale.

Santos has signed an agreement with PT Indonesia Power for sale of Wortel gas and negotiations are continuing with other potential buyers.

Wortel contains an estimated 2P reserve of 18 million boe.

Santos has 45% and operatorship. Parters are Singapore Petroleum Co., 40%, and Cue Energy Resources, Melbourne, 15%.
