HOUSTON, Dec. 2 -- Desire Petroleum PLC said early data indicate that its 14/15-2 Rachel North well in the North Falkland basin in the South Atlantic is an oil discovery.
Wireline logs and drilling data indicate that the well penetrated a gross 349 m of sands and shales with hydrocarbons, of which 57 m is net pay in multiple zones. The overall interval is 2,621-2,970 m. Total depth of 3,052 m.
The thickest zone is 8 m thick with 20% average porosity. Other zones are thinly bedded and lower porosity and require further analysis from additional wireline logs to establish reservoir potential, the company said.
Desire will complete wireline logging and sampling to obtain more information on reservoir quality, hydrocarbon saturations, and the fluid type to assess the significance of this discovery.
Desire called the results “highly encouraging” and said they “endorse both our findings and geological model from the previously drilled Rachel sidetrack well. This discovery combined with Rockhopper’s Sea Lion discovery confirms our belief that the eastern flank play fairway in the North Falkland basin is highly prospective and that further oil fields will be discovered in this area.”
