US rig count slips lower

US drilling activity dipped this week after three consecutive weeks of small increases, with 1,677 rotary rigs now working, down 8 from the previous week, Baker Hughes Inc. reported.

-- US drilling activity dipped this week after three consecutive weeks of small increases, with 1,677 rotary rigs now working, down 8 from the previous week, Baker Hughes Inc. reported. That compared with 1,113 units drilling in the same period last year.

Land operations had the biggest decline, down 5 rigs to 1,637 working. Offshore drilling dropped 3 units with 20 working, all in the Gulf of Mexico. Inland waters activity was unchanged with 20 active rigs.

Of the US rigs working, 936 were drilling for natural gas, 19 fewer than the previous week. The number drilling for oil increased by 11 to 731. There were 10 rotary rigs unclassified. Horizontal drilling decreased by 8 rigs to 932. Directional drilling increased by 4 units to 213.

Oklahoma suffered the largest loss, down 8 rigs to 132 drilling. Louisiana dropped 5 to 177. Pennsylvania and New Mexico lost 3 rigs each, with respective totals of 99 and 68. Wyoming was down by 2 to 43. Unchanged were California with 36 rigs; West Virginia, 20, and Alaska, 8. North Dakota, Colorado, and Arkansas gained 2 to 139, 69, and 37, respectively. Texas was up by 7 with 739 rigs working.

Canada’s weekly rig count dropped 1l rigs with 418 still active, up from 293 a year ago at this time.
