HOUSTON, Nov. 16
– Petroleo Brasileiro SA said it discovered light oil in sandstone reservoirs in an exploratory well in Block S-M-1352 of the BM-S-41 concession in the southern Santos basin off Brazil.

The 1-BRSA-870-SPS (1-SPS-76) well is on the Maruja prospect in 400 m of water 280 km off Sao Paulo State and within 15 km of the Tiro and Sidon discoveries and in a similar formation. Drilling continued toward deeper objectives in the post-salt section.

Petrobras holds 100% interest in the block and is awaiting ANP approval to transfer a 20% participation interest to Karoon Petroleum and Gas of Brazil.

Petrobras is exploring the area in hopes of establishing a production hub in the southeastern part of the basin that would serve new discoveries and existing oil fields such as Caravela, Cavalo Marinho, Coral, and Tiro-Sidon (see map, OGJ, Apr. 26, 1999, p. 27).
