HOUSTON, Sept. 21 -- Canada’s National Energy Board will conduct its review of arctic offshore drilling safety in three phases.
The agency has been reviewing comments solicited since announcing the review in May in response to the Macondo blowout and spill in the Gulf of Mexico (OGJ, June 7, 2010, p. 39).
The review will cover hazards, risks, and mitigation measures, including financing spill clean-up. Its phases will be fact-finding and information-gathering, examination of the facts, and public report.
NEB said it broadened the scope of the review to the extent of its legislative mandate in response to comments from more than 110 registered participants.
There is no current drilling in the Canadian Arctic, and NEB said it has no applications for drilling in the region.
