HOUSTON, Sept. 22
– Central Petroleum Ltd., Perth, said its Johnstone West-1 exploratory well on EP 115 in Australia’s western Amadeus basin cut a 98-m continuous gross oil column at 1,387-1,485 m in the Ordovician Stairway sandstone.

The company plans to set 7-in. casing to 1,525 m for flow tests. There is no evidence of an oil-water contact through the Stairway sandstone, through the Ordovician Horn Valley siltstone, to the top of the Cambro-Ordovician Pacoota sandstone at 1,485 m.

The Lower Stairway gross oil column has fair to good porosity at 1,470.4-1,485 m (14.6% gross), 14.1 m of net potential oil pay zone with net average porosity of 11%, average permeability in excess of 33 md, and hydrocarbon saturation averaging above 50%.

The Horn Valley shows evidence of gas saturation with average porosities for the unit of 2-5%, thought to be promising for shale gas evaluation.
