HOUSTON, Dec. 23 – Kosmos Energy says its Mahogany Deep-2 well encountered light oil in three intervals and “successfully appraised the greater Jubilee area” in the Tano basin off Ghana.
The Aban Abraham drillship drilled the well to 14,193 ft in 4,442 ft of water 2 miles west of the Mahogany-3 discovery well. The well is the farthest downdip appraisal well drilled by the operator so far on the West Cape Three Points block, which is east of giant Jubilee oil field (OGJ, Dec. 14, 2009, Newsletter).
Drilling results, wireline logs, and reservoir fluid samples show the Mahogany Deep-2 encountered 49 ft of combined pay in high-quality sandstones.
Kosmos said most of the pay appears to be in static pressure communication with reservoirs of similar geologic age penetrated by previous Mahogany appraisal wells.
Mahogany Deep-2 also encountered 66 ft of high-quality but water-bearing reservoir rock in the Mahogany Deep stratigraphic level. Kosmos also recovered an oil sample from a deeper zone not previously encountered in any of its wells.
Kosmos operates the block and holds a 30.875% interest. Other interests are Anadarko Petroleum Corp. 30.875%, Tullow Oil PLC 22.896%, EO Group 3.5%, and Sabre Oil & Gas 1.854%. GNPC has a 10% carried interest.
