HOUSTON, Dec. 18 – Anadarko Petroleum Corp. has reported a discovery in the presalt play off Brazil, 16 miles north of its Wahoo discovery and 6 miles southeast of the giant Jubarte complex operated by Petrobras.
The 1-DEV-15-ESS (Itaipu) well, drilled to 16,300 ft in 4,400 ft of water, cut more than 90 net ft of oil pay in a high-quality presalt carbonate, Anadarko said.
The strike is on Block BM-C-32, operated by Devon Energy Corp., which is adjacent to Block BM-C-30 on which Anadarko made its Wahoo discovery. There, Anadarko recently encountered oil in the Wahoo-2 appraisal well (OGJ Online, Nov. 23, 2009).
The company said the Itaipu reservoir has characteristics and quality similar to those at Jubarte, which is now on a long-term production test through a floating production, storage, and offloading vessel.
The Itaipu partners plan to sidetrack the well and conduct further appraisal drilling, Anadarko said. Devon holds 40% interest in the block, Anadarko 33.3%, and SK Energy Co. Ltd. 26.7%.
On Block BM-C-30, Anadarko and partners are preparing to sidetrack the Wahoo-2 well, then move the rig to the Wahoo discovery for a drillstem test, and move the rig back to Wahoo-2 for a drillstem test there. They also plan to drill two exploratory or appraisal wells on the block in 2010.
The BM-C-30 interests are Anadarko 30%, Devon 25%, IBV Brasil Petroleo Ltda. 25%, and SK Energy 20%.
