HOUSTON, Dec. 10
– A unit of Ivanhoe Energy Inc., Calgary, plans to spud a well within days in Ecuador’s giant Pungarayacu heavy oil field.

The IP-15 location is in northern Block 20 near the town of Archidona, 125 miles southeast of Quito. Projected TD is 1,300 ft, and the well is to be cored, logged, and tested to evaluate the potential of the Cretaceous Hollin reservoir.

Pungarayacu, in the Oriente basin, is Ecuador’s largest hydrocarbon accumulation and one of the largest in Latin America (see map, OGJ, Oct. 27, 2008, p. 41).
