HOUSTON, Dec. 18
– Wintershall Noordzee BV has confirmed the presence of oil in its Ravn-3 appraisal well on License 5/06 in the far western Danish North Sea.

The slanted well reached 4,469 m TVD below mean sea level in Triassic strata, encountering oil in Upper Jurassic Heno sandstone. The formation flowed oil at undisclosed rates during a production test.

Ravn-3 is 1.5 km south of the Ravn-1, which encountered oil in 1986. After drilling an appraisal well, Ravn-2, the former license holders declined to develop the discovery.

The Ravn-3, drilled by the Noble Geroge Sauvageau jack up in 48 m of water, is being suspended pending a development decision.

Wintershall Noordzee is operator with 35% interest. Bayerngas Petroleum Danmark AS holds 30%, Nordsofonden 20%, and EWE AG 15%.
