LOS ANGELES, Dec. 11 -- Poland has awarded Chevron Polska Exploration & Production a license to explore for oil and natural gas in the region around the city of Zamosc in southeastern Poland.
Under the 5-year concession, the Chevron unit will carry out seismic study and exploratory drilling for shale gas deposits in the 800 sq km area. Chevron is only expected to assess the difficulty of accessing the gas, but not to extract it.
In the past 2 years, Poland has granted 30 concessions for unconventional gas deposits prospecting in Poland, including to ExxonMobil Corp., Lane Energy, and Marathon Oil Co.
In September, Lane Energy said, “Our assessment of the reservoir potential, based on independent testing of core samples and review of historical well log data, is extremely encouraging (OGJ Online, Sept. 21, 2009).
