HOUSTON, Dec. 21 – Cairn Energy PLC has secured a drillship and will begin drilling off western Greenland’s Disko Island in the second half of 2010.
The company said preliminary exploration has identified 14 prospects and leads on two Baffin Bay basin blocks it operates, called Sigguk and Eqqua (see map, OGJ, Aug. 24, 2009, p. 38).
Cairn has conducted a controlled-source electromagnetic survey, three well-site surveys, and a multibeam survey in the area.
It entered an agreement to begin work with the Stena Forth dynamically positioned drillship in the June-October drilling season, subject to approvals.
The rig is under contract to Hess Corp. and will work for Cairn under an assignment from Hess and Stena Drilling. The drillship is now in the Mediterranean off Libya (OGJ, Dec. 14, 2009, Newsletter).
