HOUSTON, Nov. 4
– Chief Oil & Gas LLC, private Dallas operator, said its position in the Marcellus shale gas play has grown to more than 560,000 acres and leasing continues in certain areas. The company has acreage in two states.

It has drilled 28 horizontal and 11 vertical wells in nine counties since entering the play in 2007. Twenty horizontal wells are awaiting completion, and 7 are being drilled or remain to be drilled in 2009. Four rigs are under long-term contract.

The company has 70 wells planned in 2010 with a budget of $325-350 million, and will focus on specific areas, such as Susquehanna County, where it has 15 wells planned next year and will begin testing multiwell completion techniques.

Chief Gathering LLC has secured seven interstate pipeline tie-ins, two each in Lycoming and Fayette counties and one each in Bradford, Susquehanna, and Clearfield counties.
