HOUSTON, Nov. 11
– Kea Petroleum Ltd., private New Zealand operator, has been awarded the PEP 51339 exploration permit just north of Auckland in the lightly explored Northland basin.

Kea Petroleum is operator of the 2,157-sq-km permit, the Rawson Resources Ltd. and Hardie Oceanic Pty. Ltd., both of Australia, hold the other interests.

An oil or gas discovery around Kaipara Harbor could be developed quickly, and gas could fuel power generation in Auckland’s growing electricity market, said Dave Bennett, chief executive of Kea Petroleum.

The work program consists of gravity and soil gas geochemical surveys that could define areas for seismic surveys. Drilling could occur within 4 years.
