HOUSTON, Nov. 2 – A group led by Niko Resources Inc., Calgary, plans to spud an exploratory well on the Qara Dagh dome in Iraqi Kurdistan in the first quarter of 2010.
The well could penetrate as many as eight reservoirs enroute to its projected total depth of 4,000 m, said partner Vast Exploration Inc., Calgary. The group let a drilling contract after taking bids from 12 contractors.
The group shot 355 line-km of 2D seismic on the 846 sq km block ending in June 2009, from which three main prospects were identified. The primary prospective reservoirs were identified as the main carbonate sequences in the Cretaceous as well as underlying Jurassic and Triassic sections.
Block interests are Niko Resources and Vast Exploration 37% each and Groundstar Resources Ltd., Calgary, 6%.
