Repairs start at fire-damaged oil sands unit

-- Suncor Energy Inc. expects repairs to be complete by month’s end to fire damage at one of its two oil sands upgraders north of Fort McMurray, Alta.

A fire described as minor began during maintenance work on Oct. 12. There were no injuries and no apparent environmental damage.

Suncor’s oil sands facility will operate at reduced rates while repairs are under way. The company said its target for average 2009 production from the facility, 270,000-315,000 b/d, remains unchanged.

It recently reported average production during January-September of 295,000 b/d (OGJ Online, Oct. 12, 2009).
