PARIS, Oct. 2 -- France ordered the petroleum and refining industries to replace 6,500 valves that were made in China and failed to conform to standards.

French authorities alerted European counterparts because the distributor, Sud Robinetterie Industrie, also sold valves in The Netherlands and Italy.

Total SA discovered the valves did not conform at its petrochemical plant at Gonfreville and at its La Mede refinery and replaced them with no effect on production.
