June 18: The Potential Gas Committee will release major findings of its 2008 year-end biennial report on US potential gas supplies at 10 a.m. at the American Gas Association, 400 North Capitol Street, Fourth Floor. Dr. John B. Curtis, director of the Potential Gas Agency at the Colorado School of Mines, and Chris McGill, AGA’s managing director of policy analysis, will discuss the report and its findings.
Why it matters: The report always provides an impressive examination of potential US gas supplies. This one should be more interesting than usual because of the growth of production from shales in the Lower 48 states with the application of hydraulic fracturing. That means that the PGC, one of the nation’s most respected groups of gas supply professionals, will probably report that domestic reserves have grown significantly in addition to undiscovered resources.
The report also comes soon after US House and Senate members introduced bills to federally regulate hydraulic fracturing under the Safe Drinking Water Act, which state regulators say would create an unnecessary layer of rules and producers warn could make some promising formations uneconomic. What the Potential Gas Committee says about this, if it chooses to express an opinion, could be important.
