HOUSTON, May 29 -- What is being called the world's largest silica-gel natural gas-treatment plant in the world will be installed on the Nord Stream pipeline.

It will employ adsorption technology from Germanischer Lloyd (GL), Hamburg. Milan-based Sirtec Nigi SPA is providing engineering and construction for the gas-treatment unit.

Sirtec issued the contract for GL's advanced adsorption process technology for processing at OAO Gazprom's 354-Mw Portovaya compressor station on the Nord Stream gas pipeline. The plant near Vyborg, Russia, will process 6 bcfd in four silica-gel adsorption trains to meet water and hydrocarbon dewpoint specifications, said an announcement from GL.

Treated gas will then be compressed and routed from Portovaya Bay through the new 1,200-km Nord Stream subsea pipeline across the Baltic Sea to near Greifswald on the German coast for gas supply to Western Europe, including the UK.
