HOUSTON, Apr. 30 -- Transnet Ltd. has let a contract to GE Oil & Gas to supply 19 electric motor-driven centrifugal pumps to be installed at five stations along a new 24-in. OD multiproduct pipeline in South Africa. The pump packages include variable frequency drives, chillers, and lube oil system.
The pipeline will move diesel, gasoline, and jet fuel from an import terminal at Durban harbor roughly 525 km northwest to the inland Guateng region. Commissioning of the first section of pipeline is scheduled to begin mid-2010.
The line will eventually include as many as 10 pump stations, with facilities beyond the additional 5 added as needed to meet demand (OGJ, Feb. 9, 2009, p. 63). It will supplement the existing 12-in OD. Durban-Johannesburg Pipeline, completed in 1965 and operating at capacity.
The new pipeline has a design life of 20-30 years.
