HOUSTON, Mar. 26 -- PetroChina has let a contract to GE Oil & Gas to supply PGT25+ gas turbines and PCL 800 compressors for seven pipeline compression stations on the western section of China's second West-East gas pipeline (WEPP II).

The contract also includes electric-motor-driven units for another three stations. GE placed the value of the deal at $300 million.

WEPP II extends 3,400 miles from China's border with Turkmenistan to Guangzhou and Shanghai. It will have the capacity to transmit 30 billion cu m/year of gas. PetroChina expects to bring the pipeline into service in late 2010 or 2011, according to GE.

The pipeline is part of the larger Asian Gas Pipeline, which extends from Turkmenistan to eastern China. WEPP II also will require 1,240 miles of branch lines. The Chinese section of WEPP II will use 1.1 million tonnes of X80 48-in. OD welded pipe and 3.2 million tonnes of X80 18-in. OD spiral pipe (OGJ, Feb. 9, 2009, p. 52).

GE previously had won compression orders for the expansion of the first west-to-east pipeline and for two stations, including the head station, on WEPP II. GE also supplied equipment for Sinopec's Sichuan-to-East China natural gas pipeline.
