HOUSTON, Jan. 2--Synthesis Energy Systems Inc. (SES) broke ground Dec. 19 in the first phase of its 1-million-tonne/year coal-to-chemical plant at Yima City in Henan Province, China.

The facility is being developed with joint venture partner YIMA Coal Industry Group Co. Ltd. to feed downstream processes for producing transportation fuels and chemical intermediates.

The announcement follows SES' successful test run of YIMA coal in the SES U-Gas system at SES' Zao Zhuang gasification plant in November.

The Yima City plant will utilize SES' licensed U-Gas technology to convert low-quality, high-ash subbituminous coal into synthetic gas and downstream products that will supply the region's growing needs for transportation fuels and chemical intermediates.

SES will own 49% of the joint venture, and YIMA will own 51%.
