PARIS, Dec. 18 -- The European Parliament overwhelmingly approved the energy-climate package on Dec. 17 following the Heads of State summit, which earlier had approved it unanimously (OGJ Online, Dec. 14, 2008 ).
Six directives have now been approved and implementation will begin on them:
• Renewables.
• The CO2 emissions trading scheme (ETS).
• Sharing out efforts among EU states to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (not including ETS).
• CO2 capture and storage.
• Motor fuels quality.
• Regulation adopted for automobile C02 emissions (130g/km in 2012 and 95g/km in 2020).
"With this first historic vote, said Jean-Louis Borloo, France's environment and energy state minister, the EU can take the leadership in the green revolution at international negotiations on climate change."
