The US Department of Energy named Victor K. Der, a 35-year employee with DOE and its predecessors, as its new principal deputy assistant secretary for fossil energy on Nov. 4.
Der will be responsible for DOE's Fossil Energy Office operations and, in support of Acting Assistant Secretary of Fossil Energy James A. Slutz, handle oversight of the DOE division's research and development program and the US petroleum reserves, DOE said.
In his most recent role, he was deputy assistant secretary of clean coal where he directed research, development and demonstration of technologies to reduce environmental impacts and global climate change consequences of using coal, including carbon capture and sequestration.
Der entered government service as a reactor intern at the Atomic Energy Commission, one of DOE's predecessor agencies. He holds bachelor's of science, master's of science and PhD degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Maryland.
