US Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), chairwoman of the Environment and Public Works Committee, on its focus for the next Congress, in an Oct. 24 statement:

"Our central goal in the next Congress will be economic recovery. I believe that the Environment and Public Works Committee will play a key role in making that happen because of our responsibility for infrastructure including roads, bridges, water and waste water systems, as well as flood control. Investments in these areas will substantially boost the economy and create jobs. Addressing global warming will also be part of the recovery effort, creating millions of new jobs in areas like alternative energy and energy efficiency."
