HOUSTON, Sept. 25-- Connacher Oil & Gas Ltd.'s Montana Refining Co. Inc. awarded a front-end engineering and design contract to CH2M HILL for potential upgrades to its 9,500 b/d refinery at Great Falls.

The upgrades, installation of a new hydrocracker and other new processing facilities, will add as much as 25,000 b/d of throughput as well as a conversion to clean fuels (gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel). Other improvements include installation of new furnaces and a flare recovery system designed to optimize refinery operations and further reduce emissions.

The refinery is expected to improve its environmental performance through the proposed expansion and upgrade. Nearly all of the sulfur in the crude feed to the refinery will be removed and converted to elemental sulfur, which will greatly reduce the sulfur content of various products.
