HOUSTON, Sept. 2 -- Fourteen Gulf Coast refineries were closed and all Gulf of Mexico oil production was shut in the day after Hurricane Gustav made landfall near Morgan City, La., the Department of Energy said in an updated situation report.
Earlier, 12 refineries were reported idle, with others operating at reduced rates or preparing to shut down (OGJ Online, Sept. 1, 2008).
Shut-in refining capacity totaled 2.66 million b/d, said DOE's Office of Electricity Delivery & Energy Reliability.
Shut-in oil production totaled 1.3 million b/d. Gas production shut in because of the storm totaled 7 bcfd, 95.4% of the gulf's normal flow, the office reported from updated figures from the Minerals Management Service.
Gustav made landfall as a Category 2 hurricane, meaning it had sustained winds of 96-110 mph.
