LONDON, Aug. 5 -- StatoilHydro and Sonatrach have discovered natural gas within exploration well TNKW-1 on the Hassi Mouina license in Algeria's Sahara Desert. This is the fifth discovery on the acreage.

The gas flowed at 1,449 psi from a Carboniferous reservoir at 9,167 cu m/hr, Sonatrach said. Flow was through a 32/64-in. choke.

StatoilHydro said that the gas in the southern part of the license demonstrates the license's resource potential.

The Hassi Mouina license was awarded in June 2004. It includes four blocks within an area of 23,000 sq km in the Gourara basin.

StatoilHydro has a 75% interest in Hassi Mouina, whereas Sonatrach holds 25% interest.
