LONDON, Aug. 1 -- Lundin Petroleum AB discovered oil and natural gas in the Torphins prospect in the central UK North Sea.

Exploration well 21/8-4Z was drilled on Block 21/8 on production licence P1107, with a sidetrack. The well reached a TD of 8,177 ft and the sidetrack was 7,250 ft. Wells 21/8-4 and sidetrack 21/8-4Z are 12 km north of the Lundin operated Scolty discovery drilled in late 2007.

Lundin said both the main well and sidetrack encountered oil and gas in the Paleocene sandstone reservoir. "The Torphins prospect is defined by a 3D seismic anomaly, the company said.

Lundin used Transocean's GSF Arctic II semisubmersible rig to drill the prospect. Drilling commenced June 20.

Lundin is operator with 40% interest. Partners are Challenger Minerals (North Sea) Ltd. and Revus Energy (E&P) Ltd.
