HOUSTON, July 31 -- A discovery on northern Area 47 in the Ghadames basin in Libya has confirmed the potential of a new Silurian Lower Acacus play fairway on the northern part of the area and provided the area's first positive results in the Ordovician Memouniat formation.

Verenex Energy Inc., Calgary, and Medco International Ventures Ltd. of Indonesia gave the results for the A1-47/04 well, 28 km north of the companies' nearest oil discovery on Block 2 of Area 47.

On extended flow tests, the well flowed at a maximum combined rate of 6,603 b/d of light, sweet crude oil and 8.6 MMcfd of gas through choke sizes on particular intervals ranging from 44/64-in. to 96/64-in. Test equipment capacity limited the rates.

Tests were also run on 32/64-in. chokes at the request of Libyan National Oil Corp. and consistent with earlier test protocols.

Thirty-nine feet of Memouniat sandstone perforations topped at 10,189 ft flowed 1,399 b/d of 49° gravity oil with 4.7 MMcfd of gas with 1,333 psia flowing wellhead pressure, and 46 ft of Acacus sandstone perforations topped at 8,045 ft flowed 1,535 b/d of 39° gravity oil with 780 Mcfd of gas at 567 psia pressure.

TD is 10,400 ft in the Memouniat. The companies had drilled and cased two other new field wildcats as of late July on Block 4 about 160 km southwest of Tripoli (OGJ, May 26, 2008, p. 33).
