US drilling regains 9 rigs

US drilling activity regained 9 rotary rigs to 1,886 units working the week ended June 6, up from 1,760 during the same period last year, said Baker Hughes Inc., Houston.

HOUSTON, June 7 -- US drilling activity regained 9 rotary rigs to 1,886 units working the week ended June 6, up from 1,760 during the same period last year, said Baker Hughes Inc., Houston.

Land drilling increased by 5 rigs to 1,793. Inland waters activity was up by 5 units to 27. Offshore drilling, however, declined by 1 rig to 64 in the Gulf of Mexico and 66 in US waters as a whole.

Of the rigs working this week, 385 were drilling for oil, 1,493 were drilling for gas, and 8 were unclassified. Directional drilling declined by 18 rigs to 370. Horizontal drilling increased by 15 to 548 units.

Among the major producing states, Texas' rig count was up by 10 rotary rigs to 931 making hole. Louisiana gained 8 for a total of 160 now drilling. Rigs in Alaska increased by 2 to 8 rigs working. New Mexico and California were unchanged at 74 and 43 rigs, respectively. Oklahoma was down by 1 rig to 207. Wyoming dropped 2 to 68. Colorado lost 4 to 106 rigs.

Canada's rig count escalated by 42 units to 218, down from 226 a year ago.
