LONDON, June 24 -- Samsung Heavy Industries Co., South Korea, awarded a turnkey contract to Saipem SA to develop the Saipem FDS 2 field development ship for deepwater fields. The vessel, which is expected to be ready by 2010, will cost €380 million to construct, including a vertical J-lay tower. It will be built at the Koje shipyard.
Saipem FDS 2 will be equipped with a DP3 dynamic-positioning system, will have a maximum transit speed of 13 knots, and will accommodate 325 people.
The vessel will be 183 m long and 32 m in moulded breadth, with a moulded depth of 14.5 m. The vertical J-lay tower will have a maximum capacity of 2,000 tons and will be designed to J-lay marine pipelines of up to 36-in. diameter in water to 3,000 m deep. The vessel will also have the ability to lay pipelines of the same diameter using the S-lay configuration.
