MELBOURNE, June 27 -- The Melbourne-based joint venture of ExxonMobil Corp. and BHP Billiton has lodged an environmental application for Phase 2 development of Turrum oil and gas field in Bass Strait.

The $1.5 billion (Aus.) project will tap 1 tcf of gas and 10-20 million bbl of oil and condensate (OGJ, 6/22/99.

Turrum lies about 45 km off eastern Victoria. 'Turrum 2,' as it is called, will require a new offshore platform, to be known as Marlin B. The original Turrum Phase 1 project began in 2004 as an appraisal project and was tied into the Marlin A platform.

WorleyParsons is finalizing the front-end engineering design. The plan is to link Marlin A and the new Marlin B with a 60 m bridge.

First production from the new project will be oil and condensate timed for 2011-12. The gas will be reinjected into the reservoir until a new plant equipped to remove the high carbon dioxide content is built at the onshore Longford facilities by 2015.

Moves on Turrum 2 follow the joint venture's decision late last year to proceed with a $1.4 billion development of nearby Kipper field.
