LONDON, May 13 -- Dana Petroleum PLC is evaluating development options after discovering its second oil field in the Rinnes area in the UK northern North Sea.
The company drilled to 6,935 ft total depth on Block 210/24a. The discovery well 210/24a-11z struck a Brent reservoir that had excellent quality sands in the Lower Brent reservoir sequence compared with the Upper Brent.
Dana Petroleum will not drill-stem test the well because it has data from the adjacent West Rinnes oil accumulation after flowing 7,800 b/d on test. Dana Petroleum also collected for East Rinnes a comprehensive set of electric wireline logs, including pressure data and oil samples. It will integrate the information from both wells and remap the two structures to identify other drilling prospects and determine the volumes of oil in this area.
"Initial analysis indicates that the East Rinnes oil is similar to the high-quality crude discovered at West Rinnes and to that being produced by Dana at the nearby Hudson oil field," Dana Petroleum said.
The West Rinnes oil accumulation is 5 km from the Dana operated Hudson producing oil field and 2½ km from its Melville oil field (OGJ Online, Apr. 24, 2008). East Rinnes is the fourth oil field now under Dana's operatorship in this prolific area of the northern North Sea.
Tom Cross, Dana's chief executive, said the East Rinnes find "should lead to a substantial new oil development in this part of the North Sea and significantly increase the probability of success for a number of Dana's other prospects in the immediate vicinity, such as West Hudson, North Melville, and South West Rinnes."
