HOUSTON, Apr. 4 -- The US rig count jumped by 22 to 1,830 rotary rigs working—the largest number since the week ended Jan. 10, 1986, when 1,880 units were drilling, said Baker Hughes Inc.

The latest count is up from 1,726 rigs making hole during the same period a year ago. There were increases in every category, including an additional 14 land rigs to a total 1,747 drilling. Inland waters activity increased by 4 units to 19. The number of offshore rigs working on federal leases increased by 4 to 64, including 3 to 62 in the Gulf of Mexico.

Texas registered the biggest increase, up by 23 rigs to 904. New Mexico's rig count increased by 4 to 74. Wyoming was up 3 to 68. Alaska had 9 rigs working, 2 more than the previous week. Louisiana and Colorado were unchanged at 142 and 123 rigs, respectively. Oklahoma lost 7 rigs with 206 still drilling. California was down 1 rig to 34.

Canada continued its seasonal decline, down by 45 rigs to 126 drilling, the same number that was working at this time in 2007.
